SMART4ENV Highlighted at GIS Disaster Risk Reduction Workshop

Leonardo Piccinetti, our CEO , took center stage at the prestigious International conference on GIS for Disaster Risk Reduction Workshop organized by the Department of Environmental Science at Integral University, Lucknow. The conference, held on November 29, 2023, in collaboration with the State Disaster Response Fund (SDRF) of Uttar Pradesh, brought together experts and researchers in the field of disaster risk reduction.

During the conference, Mr. Piccinetti captivated the attendees by introducing SiTeS Company and highlighting its important role in the field. His presentation focused on SiTeS’ flagship project, SMART4ENV, which aims to enhance the scientific capacity of TUBITAK MAM, a key research institution in Turkey.

General Objective of SMART4ENV:
Leonardo started by outlining the general objective of SMART4ENV is improving TUBITAK MAM R&I capacities to strengthen its scientific reputation, attractiveness and networking channels while stimulating scientific excellence in the field of Smart Environmental Solutions (SES) for climate change adaptation and mitigation of key applications for the Turkish economy within water, agriculture. The project now developing capacity building of permanent scientists, Early-Stage Researchers (ESR) training, enlarge cooperation between academia, industry, and stakeholders in Turkey with a general sustainable framework for research, international networking, mobility, and integration in the European Research Area (ERA)

SMART4ENV Partners:
The CEO then proceeded to introduce the partners involved in the SMART4ENV project. These partners include leading universities, research institutions, and industry experts from Europe. Their collaboration brings together expertise in diverse fields, fostering a multidisciplinary approach to address environmental concerns.

SMART4ENV Study Cases:
Leonardo showcased some of the notable study cases from the SMART4ENV project. one of these case studies demonstrate the practical application of Smart Technologies and innovative methodologies in environmental management. Real-time alarming and problem detection for sludge process using real-time images. This case study involves using visual sensors and imaging to monitor sludge characteristics and water content for problem detection and operational parameter tuning in a municipal wastewater treatment plant and also Leonardo showed other SMART4EN case study which focuses on optimizing water usage in an irrigation system using microcontrollers, sensors, and actuators. The goal is to provide an efficient and effective water usage solution to prevent overuse of irrigation water, with end users including irrigation associations and farmers. Linked authorities include farmers, irrigation unions, and the Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry. The research to be developed includes automatically starting/stopping water pumps on the irrigation site based on the soil moisture content acquired from the moisture content sensor as well as the ultrasonic sensor measuring the water level in the reservoir, along with a user-friendly Graphical User Interface for real-time monitoring and interaction.

Opportunities for Collaboration:
In his presentation, Leonardo emphasized the opportunities for collaboration between SMART4ENV and Integral University. He highlighted the potential synergy between the research capabilities of TUBITAK MAM and the academic expertise of Integral University. Collaboration in areas such as data analytics, remote sensing, and GIS mapping could pave the way for groundbreaking advancements in disaster risk reduction and environmental sustainability.

The participation of SiTeS CEO at the GIS for Disaster Risk Reduction Workshop was a significant milestone in promoting SMART4ENV and fostering collaboration for environmental research. The showcase of the project’s objectives, partners, study cases, and prospects for cooperation with Integral University reinforced the importance of innovative approaches and partnerships in addressing global environmental challenges.

The SMART4ENV project, with its focus on enhancing TUBITAK MAM’s scientific capacity, holds immense potential to contribute to the development of sustainable solutions and provide valuable insights into environmental management. As organizations and institutions come together, sharing knowledge, expertise, and resources, we move closer to a more resilient and sustainable future.
