Turning Seafood Production Water Streams into Blue Value

Date: October 6, 2025
Location: Gothenburg, Sweden

Sustainable Innovation Technology Services Ltd (SITES) is proud to be part of the SEAlgaePower project, co-funded by the European Commission and the Sustainable Blue Economy Partnership (SBEP).

The project officially kicked off at the University of Gothenburg, coordinated by Professor Cornelia Spetea Wiklund, bringing together 13 partners from seven countries to revolutionise how aquaculture and seafood processing industries manage their production water streams — transforming a costly challenge into a sustainable circular solution.

SEAlgaePower will develop and demonstrate microalgae-based technologies that purify nutrient-rich water from seafood production while generating valuable biomass rich in proteins, lipids, omega-3s, and bioactive polysaccharides. These components can then be refined into food, feed, fertilisers, nutraceuticals, and MedTech materials, advancing Europe’s climate-neutral, zero-waste blue economy.

As the project’s leader for Communication, Dissemination, and Socio-Economic Assessment, SITES ensures that SEAlgaePower’s results reach key stakeholders across industry, policy, and academia while evaluating the circularity and sustainability impacts of the developed technologies.

“SEAlgaePower is a perfect example of how science and sustainability can work hand in hand,” said Dr. Leonardo Piccinetti, Managing Director at SITES. “By connecting researchers, industries, and innovators, we’re transforming seafood production water streams into a new source of blue value.”

Over the next three years, the project will identify microalgae species suited to Nordic and Mediterranean marine environments, demonstrate high nutrient-removal efficiency, and deliver algae-based product prototypes for sustainable markets.

By closing the loop between aquaculture and microalgae cultivation, SEAlgaePower will help minimise environmental impacts and create new blue bioproducts that contribute directly to the EU Green Deal, Circular Bioeconomy Strategy, and Blue Economy goals.

SEAlgaePower is co-funded by the European Commission and the Sustainable Blue Economy Partnership (SBEP), with national co-funding from participating countries.vation, SEAlgaePower will contribute directly to Europe’s Green Deal, Circular Bioeconomy Strategy, and Blue Economy goals.
