(SITES) participated in the BATRAW event “From Regulation to Practice: Building an EU Industrial Ecosystem for Battery Circularity”, held in Madrid on 4 March 2026.

The event gathered policymakers, researchers, and industry stakeholders to explore the future of battery recycling, second-life battery applications, and Europe’s strategic autonomy in critical raw materials.

Shariefah Darries from SITES attended the event and highlighted key insights related to battery recycling technologies, economic challenges in circular battery systems, and policy developments within the European Union.

The discussions emphasized the growing need for scalable recycling solutions, improved regulatory frameworks, and stronger collaboration between industry and research projects.

SITES contributes to these goals through its involvement in several European research initiatives, including the FREECOVER project, which focuses on innovative solutions for sustainable recovery of critical raw materials.

The event highlighted that while technological solutions already exist, scaling them across Europe will require coordinated policy implementation and continued research innovation.
